Our team is raising critical funds for congenital heart defects! Congenital heart defects are the most commonly occurring birth defect, affecting approximately 1 in 110 babies born, or a child born every 15 minutes. Congenital heart defects are the leading cause of birth-defect related mortality. Surgery can help to repair some defects, but many individual with CHDs require additional operation(s) and/or medication.
Though 85% of babies born with a CHD now live to at least age 18, children born with more critical forms of CHDs are less likely to reach adulthood.
CHD patients may face lifelong health problems including growth and eating issues, developmental delays, difficulty with exercise, heart rhythm problems, heart failure, sudden cardiac arrest, or stroke. About 20% to 30% of persons with CHD have other birth defects or genetic disorders.
Funded research is making a very big difference in the lives of CHD patients, helping to reduce incidences and increase survival, longevity and quality of life. Research has made a very big impact, and with survival and longevity increasing, even more research is needed to help address lifelong challenges that CHD patients will face. Every dollar in support of The Children’s Heart Foundation helps to further their mission: to fund the most promising research to advance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of congenital heart defects.
One would never know looking at Marissa that she is a child who was born with a congenital heart defect known as AVSD. Without the expertise and knowledge of her cardiac surgeon, Dr. Clark and the amazing, compassionate pediatric PICU staff at the Penn State Children's Hospital Hershey, Pennsylvania, Marissa may not be with us today. She is a true miracle baby! Not a day goes by that there isn't a twinkle in her eyes, a smile on her face, laughter to be heard, and the sheer stubbornness and willpower to give it her all each and every day. As a CHD patient, Marissa may face the possibility of more cardiac surgeries, a weakened immune system leading to lifelong health problems, difficulties with exercise and play, and the possibility of growth and eating issues, and the threat of not having a whole lifetime ahead of her. Never is a day taken for granted!
Please help us help the Children's heart foundation to raise the needed funds to continue the much needed research for our CHD patients. With each dollar raised we can make a difference!
Please support our team, join us for the Congenital Heart Walk, or both! Our little heart warrior Marissa is counting on you!
