Thank you for visiting Jacob's fundraising page for the Congenital Heart Walk. Raising funds for CHD research is critically important to all Heart Warriors and Heart Angels, and personally very meaningful to our family.
Please help us to fund CHD research by making a donation to my personal fundraising page. Together we can make a life-saving difference! Here is our story of entering the life of having a child with CHD.
On August 19, 2016 Jacob Lee Hart came into our world a perfect, handsome, strong-willed baby! On August 20, the very next day, we learned that something was wrong with his heart. Matt and I will never forget the moment when the nurse rolled our not even 24 hour old baby back into the room (after he had been taken for multiple tests) followed by a cardiologist. We knew in that moment something was wrong. We suddenly became a part of a world we had never known. The world of CHD. Jacob was diagnosed with Tetrology of Fallot (which is 4 defects including a hole in his heart). Without open heart surgery he likely would not make it past his toddlers years. On December 2, 2016 we handed our 3 month old first born over to have his 1st open heart surgery. Talk about the longest day of our life! What was supposed to be a "simple" heart repair ended up being a challenge because they found more holes in his heart. After being on bypass twice and in surgery for 8+ hours along with the fact that his 3rd hole was in an awkward place to reach; they decided to close him up and wait to repair the third hole. The next few months brought complications, more medicines than I myself have taken in my entire life, many rushes to the ER, and multiple hospital stays at Egleston. Finally in February 2017, they realized something was still not right with our sweet boy. On February 22nd, we handed our weak, tiny 6 month old over once again for his second open heart surgery. Apparently his 3rd hole was larger than they realized. Dr. Kanter, his surgeon, looked at us and said "I am going to close that damn hole." His confidence gave me peace and sure enough, he closed that damn hole! After that Jacob has been thriving and is a rambunctious, kind, smart and active 3 year old. Without the medical advances they have made in just the last 40 years, we would be getting close to watching our child in a much different light!
